After being forced to postpone the dates when she contracted a bacterial infection that required an ICU stay, Madonna officially began her 40th anniversary “Celebration Tour” on Saturday (10/14), playing her first of six scheduled shows at The O2 in London. The setlist spanned over 40 songs, including a rare performance of “Nothing Really Matters” to begin the set (her first time performing it since 1999); “Justify My Love” and “Bad Girl,” both performed for the first time since 1993; the first performance of “Bedtime Story” since 1995; and tons more hits, including “Into the Groove,” “Open Your Heart,” “Holiday,” “Live to Tell,” “Like a Prayer,” “Vogue,” “Crazy for You,” “La Isla Bonita,” “Ray of Light,” and more. See Madonna’s night one setlist, and pictures from the show by Kevin Mazur, below.

Madonna addressed the Israel-Hamas war from the stage on Saturday night, saying, “It breaks my heart to see children suffering, teenagers suffering, elderly people suffering. All of it is heartbreaking. But even though our hearts are broken, our spirits cannot be broken … We can unite in a dark and evil way, or we can unite from a place of light and love. And if we all have that in our collective consciousness, we can change the world and we can bring peace — not only to the Middle East, but all over the world.”

She also spoke about the bacterial infection that led to the tour’s postponement, saying, “I didn’t think I was gonna make it. Neither did my doctors. I forgot five days of my life — or my death … But my children were there — and my children always save me every time.” (Speaking of her children, Lourdes, David, Mercy James, and Stella all joined her onstage throughout the night).

The set suffered from technical issues early in the night; “This is exactly what you don’t want to happen on your opening night,” Madonna told the crowd, using the pause to reminisce about the early days of her carer in NYC. It also featured lavish designer costuming, an array of dancers, and for the first time for Madonna, no onstage band. Watch attendee-taken video from Saturday below.

The Celebration Tour hits North America starting in December and includes NYC shows on December 13, 14, and 16 at Barclays Center, and January 22, 23, and 29 at Madison Square Garden. See all dates below.

The 2023 edition of East Coast pop cultural behemoth New York Comic Con is underway now at Javits Center in NYC. With members of the Screen Actors Guild continuing to strike for a fair contract, fewer of them are making appearances than in previous years, but there’s still plenty of announcements, trailers, and excellent cosplay to take in. For the latter, see pictures from Friday by Sachyn Mital below.

The Walking Dead shared a new teaser for their The Ones Who Live limited series on AMC, which continues the story of Rick Grimes (Andrew Lincoln) and Michonne (Danai Gurira), who left the original series in seasons 9 and 10. Scott Gimble is showrunner, and it premieres in February. “We… have been cooking something up for you all because we missed you and we owe you the conclusion of this story of Rick and Michonne,” Gurira told the crowd at Comic Con. Lincoln added, “I personally can’t wait to get my cowboy boots back on and get the band back together.”

Attendees also got a sneak peak at the final six episodes of Fear The Waling Dead, which returns for its midseason premiere on Sunday, October 22 on AMC and AMC+.

The second trailer for Kurt Russell-starring Godzilla series Monarch: Legacy of Monsters has also arrived. It’s out on November 17 on Apple TV+, and also stars Wyatt Russell, Anna Sawai, Kiersey Clemons, Ren Watabe, Mari Yamamoto, Anders Holm, Joe Tippett, and Elisa Lasowski.

Toei Animation announced a new Dragon Ball Z series at Comic Con, DAIMA, debuting in fall of 2024. Series creator Akira Toriyama is “deeply involved” in the new show, according to executive producer Akio Iyoku, and it features chibi versions of Goku, Vegeta, and other characters.

A teaser trailer for a new spinoff sequel to Orphan Black, the Krysten Ritter-starring Orphan Black: Echoes, arrived on Thursday at NYCC. Ritter also executive produces the series, which features Rya Kihlstedt, James Hiroyuki Liao, Reed Diamond, Amanda Fix, Avan Jogia, Keely Hawes, and more. It’s currently expected out in 2024.

Stay tuned for more from NYCC 2023, and check out pictures from Friday below, and all of the trailers mentioned below.

So many artists, so many songs, so little time. Each week we review a handful of new albums (of all genres), round up even more new music that we’d call “indie,” and talk about what metal is coming out. We post music news, track premieres, and more all day. We update a playlist weekly of some of our current favorite tracks. Here’s a daily roundup with a bunch of interesting, newly released songs in one place.

ICE SPICE & REMA – “PRETTY GIRL”

Rising Bronx drill star Ice Spice has been flexing her multi-genre muscles lately, and today we get to hear her team up with Nigeria’s Rema on an Afrobeats song.

FRED AGAIN.. FT JOZZY – “TEN”

Fred Again.. is in the middle of a sold-out three-show run at NYC’s Forest Hills Stadium and in celebration he dropped this new track made with Jozzy and Jim Legxacy. “This song is about missing home,” says Fred Again.. “Which I have this year more than ever.” He adds, “Jozzy and Jim are both fuckin g’s and great friends from different sides of the world which I kinda love because it feels like one voice is coming from LA and another from London. But yeh foreal I wanna thank them for making this song wit me and also jus for bein my mates. Cos I guess that’s the thing that makes being away from home better? Its always the people innit.”

THE DRUMS X RICO NASTY – “DYING”

The Drums’ new album Jonny is out today and it’s good. As a surprise the band also released a new single today, “Dying,” which is not on the album but it does feature Rico Nasty. “Working with Jonny has been a dream,” says Rico Nasty. “He has such a vulnerable soul… the song came about pretty simply. We’ve been showing love to each other throughout the years and our schedules finally allowed us time to make something beautiful together. The song is about spending all your life dying for love.”

KATE PIERSON (B-52S) – “EVERY DAY IS HALLOWEEN” FT SIA

Sadly, this is not a Ministry cover, but B-52s cofounder Kate Pierson has written her own song titled “Every Day is Halloween,” which she made with Sia. “It seems that Halloween is everyone’s favorite holiday yet there are only a handful of Halloween songs!” declares Kate Pierson. “So I am correcting this grave mistake with a VERY spirited song written by me and with the supernatural SIA and the soulful SAM DIXON.”

ERICK THE ARCHITECT – “AMBROSIA” (ft. CHANNEL TRES)

Erick the Architect of Flatbush Zombies taps Channel Tres for the hip-house-leaning “Ambrosia.”

MAIYA THE DON – “HE CAN’T REACH” (ft. ENCHANTING)

Having just released her debut mixtape Hot Commodity earlier this month, New York rapper Maiya the Don has now released a new banger for Issa Rae’s Rap Sh!t.

MARIAH THE SCIENTIST – “FROM A WOMAN” / YOUNG THUG – “FROM A MAN”

Mariah the Scientist announced a new album, To Be Eaten Alive, due October 27 via her new label home of Epic Records. The first single is the London on da Track-produced R&B slow jam “From A Woman,” which was released alongside her romantic partner Young Thug’s song “From A Man.”

OFFSET – “FREAKY” (ft. CARDI B)

Offset’s new album Set It Off today, and it features two songs with his wife Cardi B, recent single “Jealousy” and the new “Freaky.” As always, it’s a treat to hear these two together.

WAYSIDE – “HALF NELSON”

Wayside lean into grunge revival on new single “Half Nelson” off their upcoming Will Yip-produced album What Does Your Soul Look Like.

BLANKET – “EUPHORIA”

Blanket’s “Euphoria” is a stirring blend of sludge and shoegaze.

MIKE DIMES – “DO NOT DISTURB” (ft. DRO KENJI)

Texas upstart rapper Mike Dimes remains prolific and consistently great on the loud, booming trap of “Do Not Disturb.”

PROMISELAND – “TAKE THE HOUSE DOWN” (BOYS NOIZE REMIX)

“Promiseland is heavily inspired by Industrial/electronic/club music and even with a more punk aesthetic I often pop up at sweaty rave here in New York to perform a song or two,” says Promiseland’s Johann Rashid of this new Boys Noize remix. “Promiseland is the vibe that keeps the floor dancing at 4AM. I wanted to capture a slice of the night here in New York City. From club to club, the energy on the dance floor seems to mimic the insanity from the streets.”

MIZMOR – “DOUBT” (PORTUGAL. THE MAN COVER)

One-man black metal band Mizmor is the brother of former Portugal. The Man member Ryan Neighbors, and now PTM has commissioned a cover of “Doubt” by Mizmor. “Collaborating with John [Gourley] and [director] Mike [Ragen] was a lot of fun,” Mizmor says. “My brother, Ryan, used to play in Portugal. The Man, and I was the kid brother who played heavy music; I think John always thought that was kind of cool… but it wasn’t until Mike’s music video trilogy idea that it clicked on exactly how to meld the Mizmor sound with the PTM sound.”

FLYING RACCOON SUIT – “EAT THE WORLD”

Mississippi indie-ska-punks Flying Raccoon Suit have shared the second single off their upcoming Bad Time Records debut Moonflower, and this one finds them blending shouting, sneering punk with bright, rich horns.

YOUTH FOUNTAIN – “IDENTICAL DAYS”

Vancouver emo/pop punks Youth Fountain have shared another yearning, catchy taste of Together In Lonesome (due 11/3 via Pure Noise).

CHRIS STAPLETON – “IT TAKES A WOMAN”

Chris Stapleton delivers an arresting ballad with “It Takes A Woman” off his upcoming album Higher.

MURA MASA – “RISE” FT. NADIAH & “GIMME”

Ahead of his DJ set at Fabric in London tonight (10/13), Mura Masa has shared a new double single, the NADIAH-featuring house track “Rise,” and the glitchy “Gimme.”

MOUTHBREATHER – “IMAGINARY SKIN”

MouthBreather’s fourth album Self-Tape comes out November 10 via Good Fight Music, and new single “Imaginary Skin” finds their metalcore sounding as ruthless and chaotic as ever.

RUBI ROSE – “HOOD BITCH AESTHETIC”

Rubi Rose tones it down for a slow jam with “Hood Bitch Aesthetic.”

JESSE JO STARK – “FALLOUT”

As she wraps up her North American tour, Jesse Jo Stark has shared a yearning, country-tinged new waltz, “Fallout.”

FLOWDAN, LIL BABY & SKRILLEX – “PEPPER”

Grime MC Flowdan, Atlanta rapper Lil Baby, and electronic star Skrillex come together on “Pepper.”

SILENT THUNDER (LAMP OF MURMURR) / ZMYRNA SPLIT

Silent Thunder is another project of M from Lamp of Murmurr, and today he released a split with Zmyrna.

YNG LVCAS – “PERREANDO TRISTE” (ft. EL MALILLA, EL BOGUETO & UZIELITO MIX)

A lot of new albums came out today, and one we didn’t get a chance to review that’s very worth hearing is Super Estrellas by rising Mexican reggaetonero Yng Lvcas. It includes “Perreando Triste” which also has a new video.

PAUL VAN DYK X PHUTURE X DJ PIERRE – “ACID TRAXXX”

A few techno-house legends have gotten together for this squelchy old-school track. Says Paul Van Dyk, “Working with DJ Pierre has been a dream come true. He’s a founding member of music as we know it and revolutionized electronic music with his innovative use of the Roland TB-303. We wanted to create a track that pays homage to the roots of electronic music while pushing boundaries and taking listeners on a sonic journey.”

HOLY SHIP (EX-BLACKSTRAP) – “GODLESS YOU”

Jonatan Westh, who used to play in Swedish band Blackstrap, now makes trippy psych as Holy Ship. New single “Godless You” should appeal to Spiritualized fans.

THE LIBERTINES – “RUN RUN RUN”

The Libertines are back with All Quiet On The Eastern Esplanade, their first album in nine years, which will be out March 8 via Casablanca Records. The first single “Run Run Run,” which was written and sung by Carl and is a corker, with that Libertines swagger and camaraderie intact.

EYEDRESS & MAC DEMARCO – “MY SIMPLE JEEP”

Eyedress tapped Mac DeMarco for single “The Dark Prince” back in August and now they’ve back with new single “My Simple Jeep” where they celebrate the simple things in life. They wrote the song together and recorded it with producer Zach Fogarty who also plays keyboards on the song. The video is cool, too.

Kirin J Callinan has released a new single from his upcoming album If I Could Sing. “Eternally Hateful” is an ’80s-style synth-rock jam, the kind that is perfect for his bravado-filled style. As good as the song is, though, the video is better.
